DIANE SCHWEIKER KASPAREK

"I was born in Oregon with Native American and Black Irish parentage, and have spent my life in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. My tribal name is Wyandotte, derived from the Iroquoian word 'wendat' meaning people of the peninsula or 'islanders.' The Native American spirit and traditions are essential elements in all my paintings. That tradition was passed down from the elders; from molding clay-mud into human figures, animals and other natural art forms.

"I learned drawing and painting from my mother, grandmother and others in our community while living on top of a mountain in Oregon. I have studied under masters Kitty Wallis, Alex Powers and George James who uses Yupo paper, and along with my family heritage, led me to search out art books and technical manuals to develop my style over the years.

"I recently married and now paint under the name of Diane Kasparek and sign my paintins as D. Kasparek. My earlier paintings are under the name of Diane Schweiker. I live in Olga, WA on Orcas Island, and my studio is an old apple packing shed with vine covered entry archways which looks out over Buck Bay.

"As a personal note, I am most proud and thrilled to be the mother of grown children: Heidi, Jason and Justin. This is where the heart lives.

"A portion of all sales are contributed to the Orcas Island Senior Center, showing my continued support and gratitude for our elders."
