2 CONC ern Canada. Unimpressed with Winnipeg and short of cash, he was attracted to Edmonton by rumo

2 CONC ompany reported its worth at between $75,000 and $125,000. By 1899 the extent of his investme
2 CONC nt had persuaded Hutchings to incorporate as the Great West Saddlery Company. The firm manufa
2 CONC ctured harnesses, saddles, trunks, and bags in Winnipeg and Calgary and ran a wholesale busin
2 CONC ess in harness, saddlery, and hardware. As well, the company operated ten retail stores throu
2 CONC ghout the west and developed a significant export trade to South Africa, Australia, and New Z
2 CONC ealand. By 1911 its assets were estimated at $750,000 to $1,000,000 and Hutchings himself wa
2 CONC s reputed to be worth $2,000,000, including his investments in several insurance and loan com

2 CONC led workers in England. Disgruntled former employees disputed his claims of job opportunitie
2 CONC s and wrote home that his real goal was to depress wages and weaken organization among his wo
2 CONC rkers. Hutchings routinely fired union men. In October 1911 he locked out ten employees who r
2 CONC efused to sign a contract pledging not to start a union and not to belong to any associatio
2 CONC n that supported strikes or promoted organization in his or any other business. When anothe
2 CONC r 14 were fired for attending a protest meeting, the dismissed workers formed the Leather Wor
2 CONC kers? Union and declared a strike against Great West Saddlery. Early in December the compan
2 CONC y laid off workers in Calgary who refused to sign its employment contract. The labour dispute
2 CONC s attracted attention in Winnipeg, where class lines were beginning to harden. The Voice (Win
2 CONC nipeg) condemned Hutchings for duping uninformed ?foreign-speaking? workers into signing th
2 CONC e contract. The Trades and Labor Council supported the strike, as did several local unions, w

2 CONT The most controversial reaction came from Winnipeg?s Ministerial Association. At the reques
2 CONC t of several employees, the association appointed a committee in October 1911 to investigat
2 CONC e the dispute. Its report, issued the following month, emphasized that wages and factory cond
2 CONC itions were not issues, but that the right of organization was. In response to the report, th
2 CONC e reverends Charles William Gordon*, Salem Goldworth Bland*, and Fred Cook moved that the ass
2 CONC ociation condemn Hutchings for discriminating against union men. Although the Reverend Jame
2 CONC s Shaver Woodsworth*, a member of the committee, argued for the adoption of a stronger resolu
2 CONC tion against the open shop, the majority favoured moderate censure. Even this resolution crea
2 CONC ted a breach, since the Reverend David Christie of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where Hut
2 CONC chings was an office holder, resigned from the association. Pressure from the clergy did no
2 CONC t move Hutchings and both the strike and the union collapsed.
2 CONT In 1917 Hutchings again achieved national notoriety, this time for his attempts to seek an ex
2 CONC emption from military service for his son Harold Gifford. His son, he argued before the appea
2 CONC l judge, was crucial to his plant?s operations. Besides, he said, ?I helped to build up thi

2 CONC usiness, ?I want to hand it over to my son to keep.? Hutchings claimed to be planning a shipb
2 CONC uilding operation in Vancouver and to be intending to leave the saddlery business under his s

2 CONT      "I don't know much about the Aunts, except Aunt
2 CONT Hatty.  She left home at a very early age and went west with a neighborhood
2 CONT family.  They had quite a trip going through the States - no railway operating
2 CONT west of Winnipeg at that time.  They settled in Yale B. C. outside of
2 CONT Vancouver.  Latter she married a freighter and she opened a store, post office,
2 CONT restaurant and hotel.  It was the social centre of the community and at night
2 CONT she entertained the loggers and miners.  She could play the piano and had a
2 CONT good voice as well as a very entertaining personality,  often acted as midwife.
2 CONT Much loved by all the settlers- her first husband was drowned- and she married
2 CONT Russel Poole- a C. P. R. cabinet maker and very excellent mechanic.  The old
2 CONT clock belonged to him.
2 CONT 
2 CONT     The son from Aunt Hatty's first marriage didn't turn out very well and Aunt
2 CONT Hatty grieved over that son she blamed her self for that.  So when the son
2 CONT married and had 8 very promising boys she put them all through University.  She
2 CONT sold 3 houses she owned in Vancouver to pay for their education, which I think
2 CONT was very fine.  E. J. Hutchings bought one of the places and gave it to Aunt
2 CONT Hatty to live on as long as she lived. "

2 CONT Elijah Hutchings, who died at the old home in the  Township  North Crosbyon Wednesday, Marc
2 CONC h 14, was born  in  Somersetshire, England , June 7,1823, and had he lived  June  7 1923, wou
2 CONC ld have reached the age of onehundred years. At  death his age was 99 years, nine months an
2 CONC d sevendays. Mr. Hutchings came to Canada in the year 1848 when Brockville waswithout railroa
2 CONC d communication. From Kingston he went up  the RideauCanal to the present site of Bedford Mil
2 CONC ls and there  commenced a lifewhich meant hardship and privation. After  some years he commen
2 CONC ced tobuild on the farm where he  spent all the remainder of his life
2 CONT .
2 CONT At the time of his arrival in Canada Mr. Hutchings was  married and hadtwo children. Afterwar
2 CONC ds eleven more were  born to Mr. and Mrs.Hutchings, making a family of 13, of  whom eight ar
2 CONC e still living Eli, ofOttawa, in his 78th year, the  eldest of son of the family; ElishaHutch
2 CONC ings, president of the Great West Saddlery Company limited,Winnipeg; Robert  J. Hutchings, vi
2 CONC ce-present of the Great West SaddleryCompany, Limited, Calgary; Arthur Hutchings, Winnipeg; a
2 CONC nd  HerbertHutchings, on the old homestead in North Crosby;  Mrs. Harriet Poole,Vancouver; Mr
2 CONC s. Annie Thompson and  Mrs. Emma. Hanna, of Edmonton. Mr.Hutchings was predeceased by his wif
2 CONC e  and five members of their family.

2 CONT The late Mr. Hutchings was a man of fine physical appearance and was apowerful man, capable i
2 CONC n his youth of  strength, beyond the ordinaryindividual and that strength he  threw into th
2 CONC e work of a nation builderwhen Canada was  scarcely known and North Leeds was a wilderness. W
2 CONC ithless  than two a
2 CONT cres of a clearance he chopped and cleaned up what is. now  one of thebest farms in North Cro
2 CONC sby and there raised and  educated a family themembers of which have made a  splendid mark fo
2 CONC r themselves in business.He was a man of  very strong convictions and was fearless in his def

2 CONT iberty. In politics be was all his years a staunch Conservative.  Hepossessed a pronounced re
2 CONC ligious faith with love of God in  Christ as hisonly creed and he was ready when the call cam
2 CONC e  and passed to his eternalhome.

2 CONT The funeral took place from the old home on Friday, March  16. and wasconducted by Rev. W. G
2 CONC . Bradford of Ashton, a  personal friend for fouryears of the late Mr. Hutchings, and  was as
2 CONC sisted by Rev. G. Mossop, ofNewboro. The bearers  were Elijah, Earl and, Borden Hutchings, gr
2 CONC andsons;F. L.  Hutch
2 CONT ings, grandnephew; Asa Pattemore and Lawrence Chant. The  floral tributeswere many and very
2 CONC , beautiful.

2 CONT The remains were placed in the vault at Newboro and will in  the springbe interred in the fam
2 CONC ily cemetery west of the  village of Newboro.
