The Harringtons
Directions to San Juan Island from Seattle
By Air
If you like small planes, there are several options. If you are flying through SeaTac, you can fly directly to Friday Harbor Airport on San Juan Island on scheduled service from Harbor Air. They have several flights daily and they are instrument rated -- which means that they can fly in the dark and some cloudy weather. There are also scheduled flights from the King County Airport at Boeing Field to the Friday Harbor Airport by West Isle Air.
Kenmore Air also has scheduled float plane flights from Lake Union to Friday Harbor. These are lots of fun but be warned -- they are not instrument rated which means that if the weather is foggy or the cloud ceiling is low (less than 300 feet), they may not be able to fly.
Most of these airlines limit the amount of baggage that you can bring to about 30lbs. If you have questions, please be sure to call the airline first. If you're bringing dive gear or golf clubs, check with the airline first.
Flying time is usually 40 minutes or less.
By Car
From Seattle, it takes about 90 minutes to get to the Anacortes Ferry terminal with no traffic. Take I-5 north and follow the signs to the San Juans/Anacortes.
Riding the Washington State ferries takes a bit of planning. First, read the ferry schedule. During the summer months it is advisable to park your car an walk onto the ferry. During the summer peak times, the ferry wait can be hours. Many times a ferry will already be filled to capacity two hours before it's scheduled departure time. And in the summer, they never seem to run on time! In the non-summer months, Friday night ferries can still be pretty crowded, sometimes full.
There are a couple places to park. There are pay spots near the ferry. During peak times they do fill up. There is also a shuttle parking lot....
So you made it to the Island...
If you walked on the ferry (and you remembered to tell us which one), we'll be there to pick you up.
If you drove onto the ferry, follow the traffic off the ferry and up Spring street. Continue through the four way stop and then turn left onto Mullis. Mullis runs along the airport and eventually turns into Argyle. As it starts to turn right, you'll need to turn left onto Golf Course Road. Eventually you'll pass the golf course and the road will narrow. Our driveway is the fourth one on the right, the one between the two rocks. We're the house with the covered porch and detached garage, 1100 Golf Course Road.
