Since 1987 Earthwatch Institute has supported Orca Survey.
From research vessels in the Haro Strait on the west side of San Juan
island, the passage point for both orca and salmon, EarthCorps teams have
photo-identified every individual southern resident killer whale. Teams
determine the number of new offspring, the status of the previous years'
offspring, the presence or absence of adults in the population, the social
status of each member, and the behavior and physical appearance of all individuals.
The information is provided to the local, state, and federal governments
and to non-governmental organizations for resource-management and public-education
needs.

the Orca Survey project.
