Sarasvati is one of the most enduring Hindu Goddesses. Her name comes from the ancient Sarasvati river. The Sarasvati river civilization thrived during the third & forth millennium BCE and was kin to the Harappan culture of the Indus Valley. Sarasvati is a deity of creative expression in art, music, and language. She is the Goddess of knowledge. Today in India, Hindu students place their books before images of Sarasvati to ask for her blessing.

Sarasvati remains associated with rivers and the symbolic purity of water. She is a consort of Brahma. Her four arms represent the four directions. She holds a book, symbolic of knowledge and a mala, or meditation beads, symbolic of the meditative process and it's role in the acquisition of knowledge. She plays an instrument called a Veena, one of the oldest musical instruments in the world.
