A resource and referral center for families who need support and assistance in a variety of ways: Parent support includes Prenatal to age Four, Home Visiting, Childbirth classes, Welcome Home Baby outreach for new parents, Lapsit and Linger, Stay and Play, Baby Parent Group, and Family Communication Classes for youth and families in upper elementary and middle schools.  This year the SJIFRC has served over 900 unduplicated individuals through the programs it offers which is over 10% of the total population of the island. Results of measurement tools show increased family stability, stronger social support networks, improved parenting skills and family communication. 378-5246

Starkey and Klein (2000) underscore that parent programs and interventions work best when the strategies respect the needs of families. Effective programs to engage families and community embrace a philosophy of partnership. The responsibility for children’s educational development is a collaborative enterprise among parents, school staff, and community members.
