"The story of the comings and doings of the few living then and there about, when Gnadenhutten comprised all of the civilizing race that had come to the Tuscarawas Valley is told in the records of the Moravian Church with a directness that dispels doubt. The minutes of meetings, the register of marriages and deaths, of births and baptisms, and the notes of the record maker, contain side remarks that are now priceless to the posterity that would know more of their heroic origin. For such historic hint few persons have more reason to be grateful than the people whose name has been given to the city of Uhrichsville. His entry upon those books states that Michael Uhrich was born in Dauphin County, near Lebanon, Pennsylvania, August 7, 1751, and that he was a farmer and a shoemaker. In 1772 he married Miss Catherine Koerber. They had eight children of whom those who survived their parents were John, Jacob, Michael Jr., Hannah and Catharine. Their mother, Catharine, died in December 1794. Their father then married Mrs. Susanna Krouse Capp who came with them to Ohio, where she died June 21, 1813. As stated on page 53, John Borroway and Michael Uhrich from Mount Joy and Lebanon, Pennsylvania, arrived on October 11, 1800, in Gnadenhutten, on a visit that included "land seeking." Then the Borroways came on June 9, 1801, of whom Isaac had married Johanna Uhrich whose daughters respectively married Michael Rehmel, Abraham Romich and Nathaniel Colver as told on page 55. Michael Uhrich however did not join these friends about Gnadenhutten with his family until June 4, 1804, when he bought fifteen hundred acres and began the settlement that has grown into Uhrichsville.How he built a mill on Stillwater in 1806 has been told on pages 85 and104. He was a member of the first Board of Commissioners of TuscarawasCounty, and all accounts concur in affirming that he was an energetic,useful man who lived up to the full measure of his opportunities in moraland civic duties until his death on August 14, 1817 when he was buried asa Moravian in their cemetery at Gnadenhutten."
