"Putnam Catlin was an aristocratic despot in his family. In the early 1800's youth was notably rebellious, and only a tight grasp on the reins of authority could ensure a father that his son would bring honor to his name. Putnam's wife, Polly, brought up the two daughters, but the boys were his business, and he made it a full-time job. Each son must be able to "make a good report of himself'," obey the Commandments, and repect the name of Catlin. A review of his early years shows the forces which shaped his life, to which he, in turn, tried to make his sons conform.
.
Putnam was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, in 1764, the only son of Eli Catlin and Elizabeth Wey. Catlin is a notable English name, and no doubt it gave him some feeling of superiority in the backwoods villages where he spent his life. Add to this a rigid Puritan heritage, and you have a good index to Putnam Catlin's character.
...
Putnam Catlin died March 12, 1842, at the age of seventy-eight. His letters show the character of the man and what he might have been. He had a keen and analytical mind and a gift for oratory - qualities highly prized and sought for in the early days of our country, He could have gone far, but he left no mark in history except that of being father of George Catlin. An honest, but narrow-minded New Englander, he was content to use his fine talents in oratorial essays to his sons."

Mary "Polly" Sutton [Parents] [image] 1, 2, 3 was born on 30 Sep 1770 in North Castle, Westchester, NY. She died on 15 Jul 1844 in Delphi, Onandaga, NY. She was buried 4 in Delphi, Onandaga, NY. She married 5 Putnam Catlin in 1789 in Kingston, Luzerne, PA.

"The young attorney now wanted a wife and home of his own, and when his eyes fell on pretty, nineteen-year-old Polly Sutton in her Quaker bonnet, he knew he need look no further. Polly was the daughter of James Sutton who fought the Indians in the Pennsylvania backwoods during the Wyoming massacre of 1778. Both Polly and her mother were briefly captured by the savages. Polly's playmate, five-year-old Francis Slocum, was carried off by the Indians and later adopted by the Miami tribe. Polly was one of a large family, and, judging by her later letters, she had little education. Poly and Putnam were married in 1789, the year George Washington became President of the United States."
